Boundary Inquiry

A public inquiry will take place into the plan to split Stonehouse between two electoral constituencies. The Boundary Commission had proposed that Stonehouse be split along the lines of the council constituencies for representation at Westminster. As the devision of Stonehouse into two seperate wards for council elections was highly controversial it is hardly surprising that the proposal to devide Stonehouse for national elections should raise opposion within the village.

A petition containing 161 signatures, which was raised within days of the proposal being made public, and letters of opposition from local councillors have been lodged with the Boundary Commission.

A final decision is not expected for at least a year.

Lighting up Ceremony

The lighting up ceremony was extremely well attended and a great success. The proceedings kicked off with the arrival of Santa and the Snow Queen accompanied by Strathaven Pipe Band. Local councillor John Young opened with a speech in which he thanked all those who had contributed and made it possible for Stonehouse to have Christmas Lights for the first time ever ( apart from Christmas trees over 20 years ago). His speech was followed by a few words from the Provest of South Lanarkshire council and then the Snow Queen turned on the lights.

The local primary schools, Newfield and Stonehouse then entertained the crowds with a melody of Christmas songs and Strathaven Pipe band ended the ceremony with a selection of pipe tunes.
