Alexander The park itself was probably better known for the longest shute in Scotland, opened in 1933 by Councillor Thomas Wilson and later dismantled around 1967. When Sir Harry Lauder visited the park in 1942, he said "It's a bonnie park; yin o' the nicest I've ever been in, an' something Stonehose folk should be rale proud o' ". The park possesses a floodlit athletics track, football pitch, multi-surface play area as well as woodland walks and play areas. See above for information on the sports facilities Walking The parish of
Stonehouse possesses more rights of way than any other ward in the former
Hamilton District. This network of routes reflects the economic and social
history of the area. Over half of the rights of way were established as
access to the various coal pits, quarries, limekilns, oil works and mills
in the area, the rest provide general access or follow the lines of ancient roads (Tanhill Roman Road)
and village lanes. In order to preserve these ancient routes it is important that they are used regularily or they could be lost forever, however please take care and respect the rights of the landowner and farmer. The local Community Council is active in trying to keep these open and in clarifying the exact routes. Further information is available within Stonehouse Library. |
